There are works in hindu scriptures that have sub commentaries that is commentaries for commentaries, what makes you think that the translation that you had read of the sankarabashya is the correct way to interprete it? Indian philosophers were known to use allegories as a valid form of discourse, It is like reading a English poem from class 10 book - the author could have meant them literally or he could have meant something totally different - A commentary by a third person is inherently based on his subjective beliefs - beliefs that have been shaped by the society and era they have lived in. Who is to say that the interpretation of any said person is reflective of what the original author had intended. You have only taken your critiquing to as far as you found it convenient to support your hypothesis, where is your review about the society and era of the commentator whose commentary you have taken as authoritative. There can be 20 verses for something and 2 verses against something but how are you to judge what is the relative importance of the 20 to that of the 2. A model that assumes that all verses are equally important and uses a majority rule is as incorrect as a model that assumes that the only the 2 verses are the authoritative ones and the rest should be ignored which is as incorrect as a model that uses the 20 verses as authoritative and rejects the 2.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00478357008178564183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2647581039313842967.post-16760370398281820012019-03-12T18:26:52.535+05:302019-03-12T18:26:52.535+05:301. They allow modification of viewpoints simply by having the leader of the church have a vision from God.

2. Shambuka is present in the Uttarakaanda. Yes, some people argue that Valmiki did not write it. If that is the case, then I'd like a religious authority (such as a Jeer) to state so.Seshadri Kumarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16367107762267474532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2647581039313842967.post-51202038718000748422019-03-12T18:24:02.172+05:302019-03-12T18:24:02.172+05:30Two things. I am relying on *commentaries* of various gurus, who have looked deeply at the meanings of the different words in the scriptures, epics, etc. before giving their commentary.

I believe this approach is superior to learning Sanskrit on my own and trying to translate. Because if I take that route, I can only be sure when I reach the level of a Shankaracharya. Why should I try to reinvent the wheel when the Adi Shankara, Ramanujacharya, Madhvacharya, Keshava Kashmiri, and Jnaneshwar have translated and interpreted the Gita for me? I can never hope to have studied Hinduism as deeply as any of these. What if I have a half-baked understanding of the term "varNa" based on my self-study of Sanskrit? Much better to read what the above-named Mahatmas have said about it and then form my opinion. That is what I have done.

As to your second point, there is solid evidence of incorrectness. In the same Mahabharata, within a few pages of each other, are completely contradictory shlokas. One says that one can become a Brahmin only if he is born as one; the other says that a Brahmin is formed by character alone. Clearly the two cannot coexist, and one must be deleted.

The great gurus, who wrote their commentaries in the age when there was no political correctness, make it very clear that caste (varNa) is based on birth. If you want a modern interpretation of Hinduism that does not contradict the shastras, then the shastras must be changed, or you must accept that Hinduism is discriminatory.Seshadri Kumarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16367107762267474532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2647581039313842967.post-63032318355404648722019-02-27T02:04:33.654+05:302019-02-27T02:04:33.654+05:30This is by far the best work I have read on Hindui...This is by far the best work I have read on Hinduism and it's caste system, please keep the good work going. zippy roshanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14000843518076389387noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2647581039313842967.post-74007996153354095082018-09-24T11:23:33.573+05:302018-09-24T11:23:33.573+05:30On reincarnation --> https://med.virginia.edu/p...On reincarnation --> https://med.virginia.edu/perceptual-studies/publications/books/study-of-reincarnation/ddoublehhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12748578007428860793noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2647581039313842967.post-36238009133262612992018-03-18T06:51:52.708+05:302018-03-18T06:51:52.708+05:30Excellent work sir!

No such incident happened and Ram didn't discriminate.

IndianThinkerBookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10075367353712856315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2647581039313842967.post-18734219471743615602018-01-12T06:57:37.059+05:302018-01-12T06:57:37.059+05:30Just as, one cannot become a chef by reading books...Just as, one cannot become a chef by reading books and just as one cannot learn Indian classical music by reading books. Hindu shastras cannot be learned by reading books. One has to gain these knowledge from a knowledgable person (Guru). There is a reason why Hindus have parampara of Guru-Shishya and Sampradaya.

At the minimum you should learn Sanskrit and read these texts yourself rather than relying on some translation or technology to translate. For example. The word varna, as you say, relates to jati. Varna also means color. Even the Akshara (alphabets) are called varnas. There could be some other meaning. You have to contemplate on the word varna to find an attribute common to all these meanings to understand the real meaning of word varna. Personally I doubt that technology can ever get to that point to contemplate like this and it is difficult to know how knowledgable the translator is. hence the need of a Guru.

The Mahabharata and Ramayana are Itihas (history). If you say, people think and follow these as shastras then the effort should be made to correct that thinking. Modifying any of these texts is just wrong, unless you have solid evidence of its incorrectness. Removing some of its text because it is offending is even worst. Let the history be told as it happened and let people now an in coming generations learn from it.UmeshPBloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03592839139340858602noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2647581039313842967.post-59285920873585079422017-10-30T09:19:00.846+05:302017-10-30T09:19:00.846+05:30Well, if it cannot be proved, how can any rational...Well, if it cannot be proved, how can any rational person take it to be true?Seshadri Kumarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16367107762267474532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2647581039313842967.post-89189009011418672922017-10-30T09:13:02.650+05:302017-10-30T09:13:02.650+05:30Thank you!
Regarding your points. I agree with yo...Thank you!

Regarding your points. I agree with your first point. And not just Sandhyavandanam, even in the Mahabharata it says in some places that a Brahmin who doesn't live up to what he is supposed to will sink to the state of a Shudra.

As to your second point, I must disagree. How many expatriate Indians do you see who try to get caste-based arranged marriages? There are tons of matrimonial ads in Indian magazines like India Abroad.

As to point 3, you and I can edit the scriptures, but who are we? People in authority, like Shankaracharyas, need to do this, and only then will they be accepted.

And as for your fourth point, I agree that there is hierarchy in all societies, but it is based on economics. I am not a Marxist or a leftist. The problem with the caste system is that it is birth-based, and so it is impossible to get out of it once you are born into it.Seshadri Kumarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16367107762267474532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2647581039313842967.post-71921063647751096502017-10-30T09:08:15.490+05:302017-10-30T09:08:15.490+05:30Thank you. I am a Hi...An excellent and truly exhaustive study. I am a Hindu brahmin born in a mleccha family. I have experienced both discrimination and acceptance from other brahmins. I have a few points to make — Dharma Shastras is quite clear that a birth-brahmin who does not perform Sandhya Vandana for 2 days reverts to being a Sudra - so we can say that there are exremely few people who can lay claim to being brahmins! Secondly living in the west we find that the vast majority of expatriate Hindus have abandoned the caste system. Thirdly all the scriptures can be edited and the offending material expunged - I myself do this. Only the Vedas can not be edited. Fourthly we should also be careful to avoid being sucked into a neo-Marxist leftist utopian fantasy of society. Hierarchy is integral to all societies and will always be so - even the Bolsheviks failed to eliminate hierarchy. Discrimination based on birth should be eliminated based on core Hindu ethics, and every body should be given a fair go. There are millions of geniuses among the street kids of India. Life carries its moral bills, and they are paid in the cyclical pattern of rebirth until all dues are paid in full. Hinduism here conveys an inherited sense of wrong, which is lived out in the next life, in vegetable, animal, or human form. This doctrine is nonnegotiable in Hindu philosophy. Repercussions of fatalism (that is, whatever happens will happen) and the indifference to the plight of others are inescapable but are dismissed by philosophical platitudes that do not weigh out the consequences of such reasoning. Thus it is key to bear in mind that although karma is seen as a way of paying back, this payback is never complete; hence life is lived out paying back a debt that one cannot know in total but that must be paid in total.
